Dima Bilan’s Biography

Dima Bilan is a Russian pop singer, born in Caucasus. He was runner-up in the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest. Now he enjoys wide success and is due to release his first english album after 3 multiplatinum Russian albums and his great success in Eurovision. He won the Eurovision Song Contest in Belgrade 2008 with a song Believe.

Biography:

Dima Bilan (real name Viktor Belan) was born on 24 December, 1981 in Karachay-Cherkessia. When he was one, his family moved to his grandmother’s place in the city of Naberezhnye Chelny in Tatarstan. When he was six years old, his family moved to Kabardino-Balkaria where he went to school with his sister. He took part in morning performances, recited poems and sang songs.

He graduated from Gnesins Musical College as a classical vocal performer. Dima made his debut when he reached 4th place at the Russian/Latvian festival “New Wave” in 2002. In 2003, Dima Bilan released his debut album titled “Nochnoy Huligan,” (“Night Hooligan”) which included covers of “Caruso” by Lucio Dalla and “Fever” by Elvis. In 2004, he released his successful single “Na beregu neba,” which was also the title of his second album.

Produced by the late Yury Aizenshpis, a Russian music mogul famous for his work with Viktor Tsoi in the Soviet Union, Dima Bilan attempted to reach Eurovision previously with the song Not That Simple in 2005, finishing in 2nd place at the Russian national selection. The video for the Russian version of the song was reputably the most expensive in the history of Russia’s music industry. In December 2005 Dima received two golden gramophones for the song “Ty dolzjna ryadom byt’” (this is a russian version of “Not That Simple”) in Saint Petersburg and Alma Ata. During shootings of “Noviye pyesny o glavnom”(New songs about the main thing) he received a grand prize of the First channel from the professional jury. Dima became a man of a year in the sphere of show- business because the most voters gave their voices for him according to the version of Rambler. At the end of a year he accepted an invitation from an American agency to sound treks for the musicale Peter Pan. In December a clip for the lyric composition “Ya pomnyu tebya” (I remember you) was shot in the Botanic garden. The roller proved to be fantastic and magic which correspond to atmosphere of the New Year Eve. On 14 March 2006 Dima Bilan took part in “Zolotaya sharmanka”(Golden street organ) of “International Music Awards” in Kiev where he got an award as “The singer of a year”. Dimas incendiary song “Never let you go” sounded just there.

Representing Russia at Eurovision:

In the middle of March, 2006, Dima Bilan was chosen internally by the Russian broadcaster Channel One to have the honour of representing Russia at the biggest musical contest in the world, the Eurovision Song Contest, that year in Athens, Greece. Out of 37 participating countries, Dima took second place with the dark pop song Never Let You Go, equalling one of Russia’s best ever showing at Eurovision - Alsou’s Solo was runner-up back in 2000.

Dima scored 248 points - 44 behind winning song Hard Rock Hallelujah by Finland’s Lordi - and received the maximum 12 points from a total of seven countries: Armenia, Belarus, Finland, Israel, Latvia, Lithuania and Ukraine. The only countries to not award Dima any points were Monaco and Switzerland.

Dima’s stage performance included two dancing ballerinas and a white piano covered in red rose petals, from which a ghost-like female figure emerged halfway through the song (much to the audience’s delight). Dima wore a white vest with the number representing his place in the contest’s running order - 13 and 10 in the semi-final and final respectively. Due to Russia’s poor result the previous year, Dima had to qualify for the final at the semi-final on May 18. He qualified in the top ten there (finishing 3rd with 217 points) and moved directly to the final on May 20 as a bookies’ favourite, following his strong semi-final performance.

Prior to the contest, Russian website RIN.ru reported that the head of Dima’s hometown, Ust Jeguta, had promised to name one of the streets in his honour if he won.

Gigi D'Agostino's Biography
Born in Turin, Italy, Gigi D’Agostino spent an eventful childhood between his native city and Brescia (where the Media Records studios are placed). As a child, Gigi D’Agostino always had a big hope: to be someone in the world of the disco music. Working first as a mason and fitter, he started his musical career as a DJ by organizing parties in clubs. His debut was in a club near Torino (Italy) called “Woodstock”. He was a resident DJ of Ultimo Impero (an Italian disco) from 1993 to 1998.

D’Agostino’s first release was “Noise Maker Theme”, a double-A sided record with a track by Daniele Gas on the other side, which launched the Noise Maker label, under the direction of Italian house producer Gianfranco Bortolotti. D’Agostino would continue working with Daniele Gas, as well as Mauro Picotto’s production team for the following years.

His 1999 single “Bla Bla Bla” became a major European hit. He described this single as “a piece I wrote thinking of all the people who talk and talk without saying anything!”[1] Other hit singles included L’Amour Toujours, “Another Way”, “La Passion”, “The Riddle”, as well as “Super (1, 2, 3)”, “‘Carillon” (remix of Italian DJ Magic Box) and, more recently “Goodnight”.

As a DJ, D’Agostino is known as one of the “pioneers of Mediterranean Progressive Dance”[2] consisting of minimalistic sounds and catchy, latin melodies and especially mediterranean melodies. As a producer, Gigi D’Agostino’s strength - or “Gigi Dag”, the pseudonym he uses for himself in club productions - lies in transforming a piece, originally destined only for the discos, into a success for the main-stream public.

After successes like “Sweetly”, he entered in the team of Gianfranco Bortolotti, the general manager of Media Records and suddenly reached the top of the hit parades. His single “FLY”, published in 1996 with BXR Noise Maker, the label created by Media Records for the Mediterranean Progressive house, reached the top of the sales in Italy. This was followed by his single “Gigi’s Violin”.

Subsequently Gigi D’Agostino released the song “Angel’s Symphony” with R.A.F. by Mauro Picotto, a friend from Media Records. His biggest project was the self-titled album Gigi D’Agostino, consisting of 19 tracks, which sold over 60,000 copies.
L’Amour Toujours album (1999).
L’Amour Toujours album (1999).

After his rise to success, Gigi D’Agostino musical style changed, with his sound becoming more melodic, at midway between House and Progressive, with more energetical and melodical sonorities and less obsessive rhythms.

In 1997 he released the single “Gin Lemon”, followed by 1998 “‘Elisir (Your Love)” (1998), “Cuba Libre” (1999) and “Bla Bla Bla” (1999). He later released the album Eurodance Compilation which contained 5 unpublished tracks. With this compilation he obtained the Platinum Disc and was awarded with “Best Producer in 1999” at the Italian Dance Awards. In October, Gigi D’Agostino released another hit single, entitled “Another Way”.

In 1999 his album, L’Amour Toujours (released in 2001 in the United States), including 23 tracks on two CDs including the song “L’Amour Toujours”, brought him to the 10th position in the sales parade in Italy and as a result he reached the Platinum Disc.

2000s

In 2000, his remake of the Nik Kershaw song “The Riddle” sold 1,000,000 copies in Germany, and 200,000 copies in France. He also released the albums Tecno Fes (August 2000) and Tecno Fes E.P. Vol. 2 (December 2000).

In 2001 he released L’Amour Toujours E.P., consisting of 3 songs: two new versions of “L’amour Toujours” and “Un giorno credi”, a single made in collaboration with Edoardo Bennato. “Un giorno credi” reached the top of the parades in Italy and became one of the most played songs in the national and international music networks. He was also awarded with “Best DJ-producer of the year” at the “Red Bull Awards” in Italy.

In 2001 he also released the hit “Super”, as a result of a collaboration with Albertino (an Italian music artist), which won him the awards “Best Dance Producer” at the PIM (Italian Music Award); and “Public Award” at the Danish DJs Award in Copenhagen, Denmark. In December of that year he released Il Grande Viaggio, a compilation of his favourite songs, including old electronic pieces and new rhythms and melodies. As a result, he was awarded with “Best Dance Producer” at the Italian Dance Awards.

On July 15, 2004, his compilation “Euro Dance” won Platinum certification with 120,000 copies sold in a few weeks.

Kalomira's Biography
Kalomira (?a??µ???a in Greek characters; born Marie Kalomira Carol Sarantis, January 31, 1985, West Hempstead, New York, United States), also known as Kalomoira or K-Moira, is a Greek-American singer.

On February 27, 2008, Kalomira won the National Final with “Secret Combination” and represented Greece in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008, getting the 3rd place.

Despite speaking primarily English, Kalomira went to Greece on a tip from her cousin, to compete on Fame Story (licensed from Star Academy, a reality talent show similar to American Idol in the United States and Pop Idol in the United Kingdom).

Since childhood, Kalomira’s dream was to become a pop star. She took part in many extracurricular activities at school including drama productions and musicals which showcased her singing and dancing skills. Her favorite instrument was the viola, which she studied for 9 years and played in the school orchestra. She was also Miss West Hempstead (Homecoming Queen) at her high school in 2003.

On a tip from her cousin, she entered and won second place at a music contest organized by WBLI Radio. Following her appearance, she participated as a supporting actress in several live shows with famous American artists, such as Jessica Simpson, LL Cool J and Jennifer Love Hewitt.

Kalomira entered the New York City auditions for Antenna’s Fame Story 2 (licensed from Star Academy, a reality talent show similar to American Idol in the United States and Fame Academy in the United Kingdom) and was one of the two singers chosen from a group of 200 performers. Despite speaking primarily English, Kalomira went to Greece after having completed one semester of college at Adelphi University where she was a music major, and competed on the three month long show. Kalomoira placed first and her professional singing career began.

Many young people surveyed are considerably tempted to join the ranks of Fame Story, having Kalomira in mind. Also in 2004, she had a minor credited role in the Greek TV drama series I Lampsi, playing the part of Jennifer, where veteran director Nikos Foskolos compared her to Aliki Vougiouklaki. As of early 2006 she co-hosted the Good Morning show Proinos Kafes in ANT1 TV.

Kalomira has been profiled as belonging to the very light-hearted side of pop music. Although she is famed for her high charisma, natural charm and overall innocent image, she usually sings about cliché boy-girl relationships and falling-in-love songs. Her audience is mostly amongst the young teenagers and early twenty-somethings. Her image makers have been trying to establish an ‘innocent’ ingenue look for her, which has resulted in often caricaturization.
